Day 05: Fly to Lukla (35 min) and trek to Phakding (2,652m)
We aim to arrive in Lukla between 7 and 9am, giving you time to enjoy breakfast before starting a mostly downhill walk for a relaxed first day. The hike will take 3 to 5 hours, depending on whether youβre heading to Phakding or Monjo. Reaching Phakding (2,650m/8,694ft) will take about 3 hours, while the trek to Monjo (2,850m/9,350ft) will take around 5 hours. If we are continuing to Monjo, we'll stop for lunch in Phakding and then proceed, arriving in the afternoon. Once there, you'll check into your room and have the rest of the afternoon to relax and begin acclimatising. Staying hydrated is crucial throughout the trek, so aim to drink 3 to 4 litres of water daily. The distance to Phakding is 9km (5.6 miles), and to Monjo, it's 13 km (8.8 miles).
Day 06: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
In the first couple of hours, youβll cross several of the famous suspension bridges as you gradually ascend toward the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, the official gateway to the Everest region. Afterward, the trail descends briefly before levelling out on mixed terrain. Following the river, youβll reach the final high suspension bridge before starting the ascent of the long "Namche Hill," which can take around 2 hours to climb, leading to the Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar. The entire trek today typically lasts about 6 hours, with plenty of breaks and rest stops along the way. The distance from Phakding to Namche is 11.3 km (7.02 miles).
Day 07: Acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar
Today is one of our acclimatisation trek days. The trail behind Namche Bazaar is quite steep, and you'll feel the effects of reduced oxygen as you ascend 460m (1,509ft) to Shangbouche Airport. After crossing the runway, you'll climb an additional 100m (328ft) to reach Shangbouche Hill at 3,900m (12,795ft). We'll take in the stunning views and relax for 30-45 minutes before heading back to Namche. This trek is a crucial part of the acclimatisation process and usually takes around 4 hours, covering a distance of 3km (1.8 miles).
Day 08: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,867m)
Today, we will hike to Tengboche, situated at 3,900m (12,795ft). After leaving Namche, the first 2 hours offer a relaxed walk along the left side of the valley, high above the valley floor. The trail then descends toward the river, where we'll stop for lunch. From there, it will take another 2 to 3 hours to ascend the long hill to Tengboche. Though the climb is gradual, it's lengthy, and the total hiking time today will be around 5 to 6 hours, covering 12km (7.5 miles).
Day 09: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,358m)
From Tengboche, we will head to Dingboche, located at 4,400m (14,436ft). The trail starts with a descent, followed by a series of gentle ups and downs before crossing the river and gradually ascending toward Pangboche, where we'll stop for lunch. Pangboche, one of the villages most affected by the recent earthquakes, is usually reached in 2 to 3 hours. Afterward, weβll continue with a steady uphill trek into the Imja Valley, with views of Island Peak, arriving in Dingboche about an hour later. The total trekking time today will be around 5 to 6 hours, covering 12km (7.5 miles).
Day 10: Acclimatisation day in Dingboche
Today, we will spend a second night in Dingboche to continue the acclimatisation process. Our goal is to reach an elevation of 4,900m (16,076ft), gaining 500m (1,640ft) during this acclimatisation trek, which should take about 3 hours. At the high point, we'll enjoy the views and rest for 30-45 minutes before descending back to Dingboche for lunch and a relaxing afternoon. The trek covers 3km (1.86 miles) with a 500m (1,640ft) ascent and descent.
Day 11: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,828m)
From Dingboche we will head to Lobuche, at 4,828m. The trail heads back towards the Khumbu valley and continues on a long and slow trek across a beautiful elevated route towards Dugla, where we will stop for a while to eat lunch and rest. This stretch usually takes 2 hours and after lunch, from Dugla to Lobuche, will be an additional 3 hours with plenty of rest stops. After stopping at Dugla we have a long uphill section over the Thukla Pass to top out at the Everest Memorial, before heading on to Lobuche. We will be trekking for a total of 5 hours today. 12km/ 7.5 miles
Day 12: Lobuche to Gorakshep - EBC - Gorakshep (5,160m-5,365m-5,160m)
Today, we will trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, situated at 5,160m. This portion of the journey is exceptionally beautiful and unique, featuring many sections of loose rock and glacier moraine. The trail into Gorak Shep takes about 3 hours, where we will stop for lunch before continuing for an additional 3 hours to reach Everest Base Camp. Here, we'll take some time to enjoy the base camp of the worldβs highest mountain! The return hike to Gorak Shep will take another 2 hours, concluding this long day with a total of 7 to 8 hours of hiking. Today will be quite challenging for most people, covering a distance of 10 km (6.2 miles).
Day 13: Hike to Kala Patthar, trek down to Dingboche (5,555m-4,100m)
After a restful night in Gorak Shep, those who feel ready and willing will wake up early to hike up Kala Phattar for a sunrise view over Everest. The hike is a challenging 3-hour uphill climb, but the breathtaking early morning views of Everest make the effort worthwhile. Upon returning to Gorak Shep, you'll enjoy breakfast before heading back to Dingboche at 4,410m, which will take around 5 hours. In total, you can expect to be walking for about 8 hours today, covering a distance of 18 km (11.2 miles).
Day 14: Dingboche to Chukhung (4,750m)
Today, weβll enjoy a pleasant walk as we leave Dingboche, following the trail through the Imja Khola valley with stunning views of the Himalayas along the way. It's a relaxed day with a walk of just 3 to 4 hours. As we trek, weβll have Mt. Lhotse towering on our left and Mt. Ama Dablam on our right. Continuing on, we reach the yak herder's settlement at Bibre. From there, we'll catch sight of Island Peak (Imja Tse), one of the region's most popular trekking peaks. Along the way, weβll cross icy streams before arriving in Chukhung. The walk from Bibre to Chukhung takes about 30 minutes. Once there, you'll be surrounded by glaciers and towering mountains. You can choose to relax in Chukhung or hike up to the rocky knoll of Chukhung Ri, which offers spectacular views of Mt. Lhotse, Island Peak, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Makalu, and other Himalayan peaks. Weβll stay overnight in Chukhung. Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles).
Day 15: Chukhung to Island Peak Base Camp (5,200m) and Climbing Preparation
We will follow the trail, gradually ascending south through the valley before turning east. The path then continues along the southern edge of the moraine from the Lhotse Glacier. This will be a relaxed walk, passing through the moraines of both Imja and Lhotse Glaciers, leading us to Island Peak Base Camp. Once we arrive, our guides will conduct a training session covering essential peak climbing skills and the use of equipment like ice axes, climbing boots, crampons, harnesses, ascenders, and rope techniques. While the training isnβt mandatory for Island Peak, it offers valuable tips on gear handling and climbing techniques that will aid in a successful summit. We will spend the night at Island Peak Base Camp. Approximate distance: 5km (3 miles).
Day 16: Island Base Camp - Summit Island Peak (6,189m) - Chukhung (4,750m)
Today marks the highlight of our trip as we summit Island Peak. We will start the climb a few hours after midnight, beginning with a rocky gully. While not technically difficult, some short rocky sections may pose a bit of a challenge. From there, weβll follow a ridgeline that leads to a thrilling traverse across the snout of the summit glacier. Ropes will be necessary as we navigate the glacier, which has several crevasses, and our guide will assist in setting up ropes where needed. A steep snow slope will then take us to the summit ridge. After reaching the summit, weβll take in the breathtaking views and capture photos before descending back to Chukhung for an overnight stay. Tonight, we have every reason to celebrate!
Day 17: Contingency Day for Summit
This is an additional day reserved for summiting Island Peak in case of unfavourable weather. If we don't need the extra day, we can begin our descent today.
Day 18: Chhukung to Namche Bazaar (3,420m)
Today, we prepare for a long day of trekking. Our route follows the Imja Khola as we make our way to Pangboche village, where weβll visit its famous monastery, believed to be the oldest in the Khumbu region. From there, we descend through lush landscapes and pine forests before an uphill trek brings us to the village of Tengboche. After visiting the monastery, weβll continue our descent to the Dudh Koshi River, followed by a climb up the hillside to reach Namche Bazaar. Weβll spend the night in Namche. Distance: 20 km (12.42 miles).
Day 19: Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860m)
Today marks the end of our trekking expedition. As we leave Namche Bazaar, we descend along the rocky trail, crossing suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. The trail gradually becomes smoother and easier, and the atmosphere feels noticeably warmer and more comfortable compared to the previous days. The fresh air from the Himalayas invigorates us, adding energy to our journey. Along the way, we pass through beautiful forests of rhododendron and pine trees, surrounded by diverse natural vegetation. Weβll also capture stunning mountain views and panoramas. Passing through Sherpa villages, we experience a unique blend of Sherpa culture and tradition. Upon reaching Lukla, we conclude our expedition and enjoy a relaxing time with our friends and crew. Overnight in Lukla. Distance: 22 km (13.7 miles).
Day 20: Fly back to Kathmandu (1,300m)
