The Legal Stuff

When you book a climb with Team Mount Everest, we aim for you to experience the convenience of dealing with a single, close-knit team. However, it is important to note that due to variations in relevant laws across different countries, multiple legal entities are involved in the process.

History of "Team Kilimanjaro"

Team Kilimanjaro was initially established as a sole tradership in the United Kingdom in June 2004, following John Rees-Evans' record-breaking speed climb of Kilimanjaro, completing the journey from the park gate to the summit in under 13 hours. During the initial months of operation, Team Kilimanjaro relied on subcontracting the services of an established trekking operation based in Arusha, Tanzania, to provide guiding services for John's clients.

However, it soon became evident that this operational approach would not meet John's expectations in delivering services for his climbers. As a result, the following year, John returned to Tanzania to sponsor a new trekking operation. He took charge of recruiting, training, and coordinating the staff employed by this newly incorporated local company. Additionally, John provided his own expedition equipment for the expeditions conducted by this restructured local team.

After a few years, John has chosen to utilise his expertise and experience by founding Team Mount Everest.

Arien Lifestyle Limited

With the growth in the size of the operation and the necessity to obtain access to more efficient banking services, Team Kilimanjaro, the brand that was established in 2004, was eventually no longer operated as a sole tradership. Arien Lifestyle Limited (named after John's firstborn child who first summited Kilimanjaro at the age of just 9 years) was therefore established as a limited company, incorporated in the UK with company number 11217578 andVAT number GB 288975812 - retaining the original brand / trading name of "Team Kilimanjaro".

VAT - Since the place of delivery of service (East Africa) that clients purchase is outside the United Kingdom and the EU member states (see VAT Notice 700, paragraph 22.4.3), no VAT is chargeable on the services purchased, and Arien Lifestyle Limited is required only to charge VAT on their coordinating services billed to the local Arusha-based company, Kilimanjaro Team Limited.

With Arien Lifestyle Limited being based in the UK climbers benefit from competitive UK banking conditions, and may pay for their climb or safari by bank transfer in any of the following currencies, without having to pay any commission or forex costs, and Arien will ensure that the price you pay reflects the live Interbank rates applicable on the day you are invoiced for the payment:

  • Pounds Sterling - GBP
    • United States Dollars - USD
      • Euros - EUR
        • Australian Dollars - AUD
          • Canadian Dollars - CAD
            • South African Rands - ZAR

              Package Holidays

Arien Lifestyle Limited are not travel agents or Air Traffic Organisers, and do not sell package holidays. Clients of "Team Kilimanjaro" are required to obtain their own flights. They may either book their own hotels or have these booked by the local supplier, Rees-Evans Limited.

At high altitudes, it is common to experience acute mountain sickness (AMS). Approximately three-quarters of individuals at elevations above 3,000 metres can expect to encounter mild symptoms. The occurrence of altitude sickness depends on various factors, including elevation, rate of ascent, and individual susceptibility. During the normal process of acclimatisation, many people may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness. It is important to understand that the mild discomfort accompanying this adaptation is considered normal and acceptable.

A BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator is a tool used to estimate an individual's body fatness based on their height and weight. It provides a numerical value that indicates whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. The BMI calculation is based on the principle that a person's weight should be proportionate to their height. To use a BMI calculator, you input your weight and height, and the calculator calculates your BMI by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. The resulting BMI value is then compared to standard ranges to determine the person's weight category. While BMI is a useful screening tool, it doesn't directly measure body fat percentage or consider factors such as muscle mass or distribution of fat. It serves as a starting point for assessing an individual's weight status and can be a helpful tool in monitoring overall health and weight management.
