Tracking Your Friends and Family as They Climb Everest Base Camp
The vast majority of our climbers have loved ones back home who are concerned about their safety and happiness while away in Nepal. For family and friends of a climber it can be worrying to imagine them struggling against altitude, the elements, and objective risks associated with climbing a mountain, and to have no information or updates about how they are faring. It is with these concerns in mind that we have developed a system of live-time reporting - complete with photos - sent directly from the mountain.
To track your friend or loved one's progress on Everest Base Camp, please WhatsApp their name to us and request the link to their reports page.
Choosing to Climb with Team Mount Everest
We acknowledge that a crucial factor influencing many adventurers' decision to climb Everest Base Camp with us is the direct control we maintain over all aspects of the expedition. By eliminating middlemen and local tour operators, we ensure the integrity of sensitive and specific information as it flows through our chain of command.
As a result, our climbers expect seamless communication between our management and our on-ground staff at EBC, along with prompt access to comprehensive information related to their booking.
While we believe that Team Mount Everest's operational structure provides us with a significant advantage in this regard, we want to emphasise that there are certain limitations to consider. Specifically, we urge climbers to understand the constraints of the hardware we utilise at EBC and, more importantly, the limitations of the cellular network's ability to deliver consistent signal coverage across the mountain.
Given these considerations, while climbers can rightly anticipate that Team Mount Everest maintains the highest feasible communication standards, it is important to acknowledge the objective limitations beyond our control. Therefore, climbers should not base their decision to climb with us solely on the assumption that we can consistently provide real-time photographs of their climb directly from the mountain every day of their expedition.
Limitations of Data Availability on Cellular Networks
Yes, there are limitations on mobile signal availability while trekking to Everest Base Camp. Here are some factors that contribute to the limited signal coverage:
- Remote and mountainous terrain: The Everest Base Camp trek takes you through rugged and remote mountain areas with challenging terrain. As a result, the infrastructure for telecommunication, including mobile network towers, is limited in these regions.
- Altitude and weather conditions: As you ascend to higher altitudes, the availability of mobile signals decreases. The extreme weather conditions and harsh environments can disrupt or weaken the signal transmission.
- Limited network coverage: The Sagarmatha National Park area, where Everest Base Camp is located, has limited network coverage due to its protected status and environmental regulations. This contributes to the overall scarcity of mobile signals in the region.
- Reliance on satellite communication: In some cases, trekkers and expedition teams may rely on satellite phones or other specialised communication devices for emergency purposes or to maintain communication with the outside world. However, these satellite-based options are more expensive and may not provide the same level of connectivity as regular mobile networks.
It's important to note that while mobile signal coverage may be limited or nonexistent during certain parts of the trek, there are designated points along the route where limited network access might be available. These points typically have satellite phones or Wi-Fi facilities provided by tea houses or lodges for a fee.
